Climate Change Health Checks

The number of commitments placed on local authorities and housing associations to address climate change and reduce energy consumption are increasing. These include:

  • Addition of climate change indictors in the 2008 revision of CPA
  • The Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change
  • The Sustainable Energy Act 2003
  • The Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Act 2006
  • Targets in the Housing Act 2004 relating to energy efficiency
  • Expectation of local action from the electorate
  • Expectation of regional agencies

Using a semi-structured interview process with a wide range of personnel a snapshot of the organisations activities for climate change and carbon reduction are identified. Areas of activity and improvement are then highlighted. The process ensures that:

  • First steps are made in addressing climate change, sustainable energy and carbon reduction;
  • Overall improvement targets are identified; and,
  • Next steps are identified.

The Health Check takes into account an organisations own estate, the wider community, transport, planning, housing and personnel.
